The Comprehensive Eye Exam

Our comprehensive examination includes a detailed case history looking not only at your past eye or vision problems and concerns, but also your current and future visual needs. A full eye health examination includes a dilated exam of the internal eye, a glaucoma screening test, and a full refraction in order to present you a prescription for spectacles, contacts lenses, or both.

Binocular Vision

Weaknesses in binocular vision can cause numerous difficulties including convergence insufficiency and poor depth perception. In the classroom, normal eye movements allow rapid and accurate shifting of the eyes along a line of print or from book to desk to board, etc. In sports, efficient eye movements contribute to eye-hand coordination, visual reaction time, and accurate tracking.

Accommodation

Accommodation refers to our ability to maintain clear vision at varying distances. This ability inherently diminishes over time with age but some patients may require exercises to treat excessive weakness of accommodation. Rapid, automatic eye focusing is critical to learning, reading, writing, sports, etc. Deficiencies can cause visual fatigue and reduced reading comprehension.

Treatment Options and Referrals

Once we have assessed your particular conditions and needs, we present all available options. These may include glasses, contact lenses, eye exercises and vision therapy, eye drops, medications, diet suggestions, etc. You may be referred to an eye surgeon or other medical specialist for conditions requiring further assessment and care.

How long will you be there?

Including all pre-testing, refractive, and health tests, an eye exam will take approximately 40-60 minutes. If additional tests are required or if you need to be fit or trained in contact lenses you might be here longer. Delays can happen in any medical clinic as we may have unexpected complex cases of an urgent nature that set us back in our schedule, however we do put breaks in our schedule to help keep us on time. If we are running late you are welcome to browse glasses while waiting for your exam or grab a coffee around the corner.

Vision Exams for Children and Teens

The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends that infants and toddlers have their first eye examination at the age of 6 months. Preschool children should have an examination at the age of three and prior to school entry. Children between 6 to 19 years of age should have their eyes examined annually.

Vision Exams for Adults

The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends a yearly eye exam for adults -- not only to detect and to diagnose vision changes or problems -- but also to maintain eye health. Regular vision examinations are also important for the prevention of vision problems created or aggravated by today's academic and professional demands.

Retail Sales of Quality Eyewear

We carry frames to suit all patients and we offer a 2 year warranty on all frames and lenses. We use high quality lenses such as Nikon and Zeiss as well high-index materials to keep lenses as thin as possible for higher prescriptions. We also match prices if you find the same frames/lenses for less at another Optometry clinic - just please let us know when placing your order. Please note that to come in and see an Optician or to visit the Optical Dispensary to try different frame styles, no appointment is necessary.

Adjustment and Repair of Spectacles

Spectacles need to be adjusted from time-to-time to maintain comfort of fit as well as optimal vision. We offer this service at no charge for patients who have purchased their spectacles from us. There is a nominal fee for adjusting glasses bought elsewhere. We also offer custom repair services including soldering broken frames (including titanium), replacing lost screws and plastic bridge repairs.
